物質は原子あるいは分子が秩序化したものです。物質はそれを構成する分子(原子)の特徴を反映した特徴を示しますが,分子単独には見られない特性を持ちます。金属,半導体といった性質は正にその現れです。物質中の分子(原子)の配列,秩序を制御できれば,物質の性質を変えることが可能になります。このような性質を示す典型的な物質に、カーボンナノチューブに代表されるナノカーボンがあります。カーボンナノチューブはその巻き方により、金属的あるいは半導体的な性質を示すことが知られています。物質の秩序を変えると、その性質が変化する。この現象自体とその方法を研究しています。
