This article articulates the status of phonetics and pragmatics in linguistics and in the broader matrix of communication, or semiotics. After reviewing how phonetics and pragmatics have been theorized in linguistics, it briefly describes how they are integrated with each other in the semiotic matrix of communication, centered around the discursive processes of presupposing contextualization, creative textualization, and decontextualizing stereotyping. Further, it illustrates how linguistic structure is indexically anchored on phonetics and pragmatics through distinctive features and grammatical categories, respectively. Finally, it succinctly explicates how phonetic and pragmatic variations may become decontextualized and endowed with social-indexical forces and then recontextualized to create discursive texts. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd.
