Recent studies revealed that tobacco mosaic virus infection spreads between leaf cells as a membrane- bound viral replication complex (VRC). Confocal microscopy was used to show that viral replicase and movement proteins assemble on different ER membranes early after infection, after which the membranes fuse or co-assemble, during formation of VRCs.
