Taiwan was Japan's first colony and was held under its control for 50 years until the end of World War II in 1945 (20th year of Showa period) . The purpose of this study is to analyze the publications of the women's magazine "Jokan" from 1891-1909 (24th to 42nd of Meiji period) and to find out: 1. how Taiwan was described at the beginning of Japanese governance, and 2. how thediscourse of Taiwanese women was covered, paying particular attention to the manner with which the publisher chose to portray new mid-class readers' roles and emphasized them.As a result of the study, from 1895 to 1908 we picked up articles about the progress of Japanese language education, the lives and customs of the Taiwanese women and those who studied in Japan. What was found was: I.While the publisher clearly recognized the difference between Japanese women and Taiwanese women, the possibility of "assimilation" was on their mind. 2. Although the publisher expected Japanese women to be dutiful wives and devoted mothers in Japan, in the newcolony, they were expected be active in supporting immigration, education, health, and industry. In short the magazine contained various double standards.
