Profile
There are 111 active volcanoes in Japan. Repeated violent eruptions have resulted in geomorphic changes and affected natural environments around the volcanoes. Furthermore, natural disasters including landslides and lahars (volcanic mudflows or debris flows) have occurred episodically for a long time after eruptions in and around volcanoes. I undertake the following fieldwork-based studies in volcanic terrains.
1. Reconstruction of eruption history based on tephrochronology
2. Environmental changes and human activities in and around volcanoes (e.g. vegetation history)
3. Small eruptive phenomena at volcanoes occupied by crater lakes during dormant periods
4. Generation mechanisms of natural disasters including rainfall- and earthquake-induced landslides, lahars and debris avalanches
