Profile

My research is cultural anthropological study about human - nature relations in Malaysian Borneo. How "settled hunter-gatherers" convert and shift their subsistence activities and social relations under the influences of deforestation, plantation development and global market economy is my main interest. Currently I conduct research concerning these three topics.
First topic is about identity of ethnic minorities of former "hunter-gatherers" in Borneo. Its purpose is to consider how people construct relationships with others, or other ethnic groups in current everyday life. How they form their self-image is my question.
Second, is to understand human - animal relationship in Borneo. I conducted research about subsistence activities based on hunting, and recognition of animals among Sihan hunters in Sarawak. Recently I expand my field research in various ethnic groups in various areas in Borneo. This research is interdisciplinary research with ecologist. We try to understand how natural environmental change (such as plantation development) and social environmental change (such as depopulation in village) affect local people’s hunting activity.
Third topic is about relationship of Indonesian workers and local people in Sarawak. Before, Indonesian workers mainly settled in plantations. Therefore local people considered them as "others" or “outsiders”. However, the relationship with Indonesian workers and local people becoming more intimate, because local people start employ them for oil palm smallholding. I would like to understand how Indonesian workers and local people have conflict, understand, and make relationships each other.
