He is a researcher and educator active in the field of intercultural communication studies.

Mainly targeting such research topics as multicultural organizations and teams, he is interested in intercultural communication and organizational discourses constructed at the intersections of diverse cultures. Using qualitative research methods such as a constructionist version of life story interview research and a modified grounded theory approach, he studies not only intercultural communication involving Japanese leaders (managers) who run multicultural organizations or teams but also the thought processes (cognitive orientations) of those leaders who operate in such organizations/teams. At the same time, he conducts qualitative research on the communication and leadership of Japanese leaders in multicultural organizations/teams from the perspectives of diverse non-Japanese members.

With regard to intercultural communication education, based on the concept of "context shifting" which he proposed, he has been working together with graduate and undergraduate students as he discusses various issues, concepts, and theories of intercultural communication as well as the ways of thinking and practices for building cooperative relationships among those people from different cultures.
