Profile

Takeshi Kawanaka is Director-General of Area Studies Center, Institute of Developing Economies, Japan. His main research interests are in political regime, political economy, political institutions, politics of developing nations, and Southeast Asian politics. He is editor of "Declining Democracies, Strengthened Autocracies" (Minverva Shobo, 2018, in Japanese), co-author of “Political Determinants of Income Inequality in Emerging Democracies” (Springer, 2016, with Yasushi Hazama) and author of “Power in a Philippine City" (IDE, 2002). He also stayed at Stanford University, University of the Philippines, and Ateneo de Manila University as visiting scholar. He received his B.A. and M.A. in Law from Waseda University, and Ph.D. in Political Science from Kobe University.
