Simple molecules of N,N′-dialkyl-1,4-benzenedicarboxamide (CnIPA) form a one-dimensional (1D) N–H⋯O hydrogen-bonding molecular assembly, which shows ferroelectricity at an alkyl chain length longer than n ≥ 11.
