Luminescence induced by fracture has been observed in hexacelsian (BaAl2Si2O8) doped with Yb2+ or Ce3+. The color of luminescence varies depending on the kinds of doped rare-earth elements; Yb2+ and Ce3+ show green and blue luminescence, respectively. These materials, along with the hexacelsian doped with Sm2+ which exhibits triboluminescence with red color as reported by the present authors previously, realize full color triboluminescence. The triboluminescence spectra of these materials have been measured and compared with photoluminescence spectra. The triboluminescence spectra qualitatively agree with the photoluminescence spectra. It is inferred that the origin of the triboluminescence is the electronic transition of rare-earth ions excited by photons emitted due to fracture of hexacelsian. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd.
