On October 23, 2004, a magnitude Mw6.6 earthquake struck the Niigata-ken Chuetsu, Japan. The main event was followed by strong series of aftershock. Field reconnaissance for wood houses has been carried out since the day after shock. There were many wood houses and shacks destroyed, and no apparent damage to modern house in heavy snow area. Due to the effect of non-structural element and interaction of soil-building, the structural damages were not traced by the calculation using time history analysis.
