初心者向けの言語学の教科書に次の２文の意味の違いを説明せよとの練習問題があった。１)「東京に行きます」と「東京へいきます」の違いを説明してください。日野資成（2009）『ベーシック現代の日本語学』この質問は初級の日本語教育の教室でもしばしば学習者からよせられるものである。一言で説明するのはかなり難しい。私の担当する北海道大学留学生センター、日本語研修コースで用いられている教科書『みんなの日本語初級Ⅰ本冊第２版』では２) わたしは京都へ行きます。は例文としてあげられているが、３) わたしは京都に行きます。は取り扱われていない。しかし実際の生活の中でこれらはどちらもよく使われている。「へ」と「に」の違いは何かと日本語学習者に聞かれると、私は仕方なく、両者は同じですと説明しているが、内心では本当は違いはあると感じてきた。本研究ノートでは上記の質問に答えるためのヒントを集めてみたいと思う。Sometimes my elementary level Japanese students ask me the difference between the following two sentences.1) a. Watashi-wa Tokyo-ni ikimashita. b. Watashi-wa Tokyo-e ikimashita.The textbook used in our elementary Japanese course explains nothing about the difference. Thus we instructors usually answer that there is no difference here between the directional particles NI and E. In this research note I try to describe the semantic implication of the particle NI in contrast to other particles:E, DE, and WO.Ohno (2002) argues that E expresses direction and NI a goal. The word "goal" suggests a place where the subject or object of the action remains after the action is completed. Teramura et al. (1987) discuss the difference between NI and DE and conclude that DE expresses the place of action and the NI the place of existence. Finally, from the contrastive analysis of NI sentences and WO sentences, it is clear that in this last case the particle NI expresses the existence of the subject or object of an action. By analyzing the three contrasts NI-E, NI-DE and NI-WO this research note suggests that the particle NI always contains the meaning of existence or appearance.
