Sections of the elongation zones of primary roots and mesocotyls of Zea mays L. were incubated with various concentrations of human epidermal growth factor (EGF). The growth rates of root sections incubated with 1,000, 100 and 10 mu g liter(-1) EGF were higher than that of control by 15%, 26% and 14%, respectively. The rates of mesocotyl sections incubated with 100, 10, 1.0 and 0.1 mu g liter(-1) EGF were 23%, 31%, 24% and 22% higher than that of control.
