The long-term positional changes of maxilla and mandible in four growing children with cleft lip and palate that underwent maxillary advancement with the rigid external distraction (RED) device were examined. Lateral cephalograms were used for the evaluation taken at pre-treatment (T0) immediately after distraction (T1), 1 year after distraction (T2) and 2years (13) after distraction. The maxilla moved forward at T1 and then backward during T0-T2, During T2-T3 the maxilla neither showed farther backward nor forward movement. ANS showed downward movement during T0-T3 larger than PNS. The mandible moved backward eh T1 and thereafter forward during T2-T3 while moving downward consistently during T0-T3.
