Professor of media studies of the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies, University of Tokyo, Japan.
He was born in 1963, graduated from Tsukuba University. While still a student, Mizukoshi engaged in user experience research for product planning at the design office, COATO. MA of the graduate school of sociology, the University of Tokyo. Before taking his present post in 2000, Mizukoshi was at the Institute of Socio-Information and Communication Studies at the University of Tokyo, first as a research associate and then as an associate professor.
Mizukoshi advocates socio-media studies based on historical and social perspectives, rather than focused on information technology-oriented ones. One of his primary research activities, undertaken with his colleagues, is the MELL Project (Media Expression, Learning and Literacy Project): a practical group studies on citizen's media expression and media literacy, and its successive group: MELL Platz.
His writings include "Formation of Media: A Dynamic History of American Broadcasting (1993)," "Digital Media Society (1999, 2002)," "Telephone as a Medium (1992)," "Media Practice: Making Media, Change the World (2003)," "Media Biotope: Designing Media Ecology (2005)," "Media Studies for the 21st Century Revised Edition (2014)," "Media Studies (2018)." All in Japanese.
In 2014, Mizukoshi started to publish a magazine "5: Designing Media Ecology" with Osamu Sakura, Yoshitaka Mouri, and other editorial members. Using both English and Japanese, it has tried to connect critical thought with practical design and producing a new field of media & communication research.
