有機繊維系材料で最も高強度であるPBO繊維について,疲労中における引張弾性率変化を調査した.その結果,PBO繊維は1回目の繰り返し負荷において,引張弾性率が上昇することが分かった.さらに,繰返し数10^2回で最大を示し,それ以降は繰返し数10^4回までは変化しない.疲労試験後の繊維の破面観察の結果,高応力振幅下では,繰返し数10^4回以降,き裂が発生するために引張弾性率は低下する.また,そのために疲労強度も低下する.

本研究では,フォトリソグラフィー技術を用いてPBO繊維の直接圧縮試験片を作製し,軸方向直接圧縮負荷による圧縮強度の調査を行った.直接圧縮試験を行った結果,PBO繊維の圧縮挙動は,繊維長さがオイラーの臨界繊維長さよりも十分短いにもかかわらずオイラー座屈を生じ,低い圧縮強度を示した.これはフ圧縮試験機のフラット圧子と繊維端部の接触によるものであり,PBO繊維を直接圧縮する場合には,繊維方向に対する繊維端部の水平度を上げることが重要である.

一般に微小径の繊維の圧縮強度は引張強度に比べ非常に低く,曲げにより容易に圧縮損傷を生じることが知られている.本研究では高分子系繊維の中でも最も強度が高いとされるPBO繊維を対象とし,引張強度に及ぼす圧縮損傷の影響を明らかにした.実験の結果,繊維の引張強度は繊維を曲げた時に生じるキンクバンドと呼ばれる圧縮損傷の密度の増加に伴い低下する傾向を示した.また,キンクバンドは3種類の形状に分類することができ,繊維の引張強度の低下に最も寄与が大きいものはX形状のキンクバンドであることが分かった.
