Recently,engineering design education has been receiving increasing attention. In many universities and college of technology,engineering design education is condusted using the PBL(Problem Based Learning or Project Based Learning)method. In most engineering design education using PBL, a student's grade was derived from the output of PBL, such as result of the contest,the quality of the designed product and oral presentation about the designed product;however,the output of PBL does not completely reflect the student's engineering design ability. In this paper,we considered the relationship between the education purpose,education method,and education evaluation method in engineering design education using PBL. And also we described the engineering design education in our sollege as a practical example for the evaluation method of engineering design ability. In our college,the engineering design ability of students was evaluated by written reports of the understanding of the design process and by oral presentation about the problem solving process in the PBL. By using this evaluation method,the student's understanding level of engineering design process can be evaluated.
