INTENSITY MEASUREMENT OF HIGH-VOLTAGE ELECTRON-MICROSCOPIC IMAGES BY YAG-TV RECORDING-SYSTEMS

Characteristics of a TV recording system (Gatan: 622H3) with an yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) single crystal for a high voltage electron microscope are measured for electron energies from 1 14 keV to 1,000 keV through processing the digitized TV signal by a statistical treatment. The image of a TV frame is divided into 480 x 512 pixels (2 5 6 gray levels) and the pixel corresponds to 19.7 mum x 19.7 mum on the YAG screen. From the image of a small aperture, a point spread function for the TV system is obtained experimentally and the spatial resolution is estimated to be roughly 60 mum at 1,000 kV. The detective quantum efficiency (DQE) for electron number fluctuations is about 1.0 for large pixel size of 197 mum at 1,000 kV but the value increases to 10 for a pixel of 19.7 mum. The lattice image of 200 crystal lattices of gold (0. 2 nm) is visible on averaging images of 16 frames at 1,000 kV.
