In this paper(presentation), I will analyze the meanings of robots, robotics, social robotics, HRI(Human-Robot-Interaction) and the related technologies such as ICTs or other devices in Japanese culture, focusing on Japanese cultural Ba(or Basho)(locus, place) which is considered to be the place enabling encounter of hito (persons) and mono (things), mono and koto (events or words), persons and persons, the experiences at the present time and the experiences in the past, the events in the fictional environments and the events in the realistic environments on (a) deeper, ontological or imaginative level(s). In the following passages, I will discuss these 4 points. (1) The structure(s) of Japanese cultural Ba. (2) The meanings of robots in Japanese cultural Ba. (3) Advantages and disadvantages of the concepts of Ba as a basis of potential discussions on robots, social robotics and HRI on the level(s) which is/are not reduced to techno-determination or the subject-object dichotomy. (4) Alternative critical and ethical discussions on robots in Japan which might be based on experiences in a familiar Ba (Uchi) and also in an unfamiliar Ba (Soto).
