Cymbella orientalis Lee, sp. nov., collected from the Kwangchun River, Kyungsang Pukdo, Korea, is formally described. The new taxon is characterized by its dorsal unilateral central area and areolar structure with flaps. C. orientalis is an attached freshwater species found in springs, lakes and the lower course of rivers. It was recorded from several localities within the Far East: Okinawa and Kikai Islands in the Ryukyu Islands, Tsushima Island in Japan, Beijing and Shandong in China, and Taiwan. © 1993 Taylor &
