Light emission from the prism has been investigated for the attenuated total reflection (ATR) Kretschmann configuration of prism/silver (Ag) film/organic dye thin films by means of the direct irradiation of a laser beam from air to the organic dye films, that is, reverse irradiation. Light emission was observed for merocyanine (MC) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films and hetero LB films of MC and crystal violet (CV) on Ag films using reverse irradiation, The light emission intensities and the spectra strongly depended upon the emission angles,v,here the light was observed through the prism. The relation between the peak wavelengths and the emission angles corresponded to the dispersion property of the resonant excitation of surface plasmons (SPs) in the ATR configuration. From the calculated dispersion properties of SPs, it was estimated that the light emission was caused by multiple excitations of SPs. The light emission property also depended upon the structure of the organic molecular thin films, and it was thought that the light emission from the hetero film of MC and CV was due to energy transfer from MC to CV molecules. It is thought that the phenomenon is useful for application to a new luminescent device and sensors.
