After receiving my Ph.D. (in Aesthetics) from Humboldt University Berlin in 1991, I went to Japan where I taught courses on art theory and visual culture in Japanese, and later mainly on Comics/Manga Studies. My research interests include aesthetics of comics/manga (including intercultural exchange and transcultural media, globalization and projected “Japaneseness”/Neo-Japonism), animation studies, and “Art” as discourse and institution in modern Japan. In April 2017, I fully assumed my new position as Professor in Japanology at Stockholm University.
