Bridge scour is one of the main causes of bridge failure and to determine the scour hole depth due to a given flood and adopt countermeasures, it is important to know the scouring mechanisms. Scouring is marked by a complex three-dimensional flow around the piers, which can be modeled using the Navier-Stokes equations and a turbulence model, such as the k-epsilon model. A model of this type was applied to analyze the scouring around and downstream of the piers of Shimanto River Bridge (Japan). Considering the true shape of the piers (two cylinders joined by a collar) and the shape of the scour hole around the piers several situations were simulated. The results show that for a certain flow condition the collar works as a shield against the downward flow found at the upstream face. Based on the flow field within the scour hole, a riprap protection could be recommended.
