The spectroscopic properties and quantum yield of Cu-doped SiO2 glass have been investigated. SiO2 glass is suitable for copper-doped laser medium because it has no absorption at excitation range of copper ion. The highest value of quantum yield, 78.3 ± 8.3%, is obtained at 270 nm excitation. The absorption spectrum was also observed and it depends on the concentration of copper ion. It is discussed that this phenomenon occurs because of Cu+-Cu+ or Cu+-Cu2+ interaction in SiO2 glass. The configuration-coordinate energy diagram of Cu+ ion in SiO2 glass is also presented and it explains the relation between absorption spectrum and quantum yield.
