Triethylborane-induced radical cyclization of N-allyl-2-iodo amide proceeded smoothly in water to give the corresponding gamma -lactam in good yield. Radical cyclization in acidic media was also effective. Chloroacetamide, combined with sodium iodide, was available as a substrate for the atom transfer radical cyclization in water to furnish the iodomethyl-substituted gamma -lactam.
