There is no denying that since early times the sea has been regarded as a male domain. For example, the Age of Discovery, which could be considered as the first globalization for mankind, was brought by male adventures and explorers, and after that, generally speaking, crews of exploring ships, merchant ships, and warships were always men. However, recent studies have shown that a surprising number of women went to sea. These facts suggest that the impression that the sea, or ships were masculine domain must be brought by gender stereotype. So I examined the employment of women seafarers in merchant ships in modern days. Some women have participated in seafaring since 1990s. This paper analyzes the conditions of women seafarers employed on board today especially in Europe and Asian Countries by showing the result of survey that I have conducted for my research.
