リンゴの育種には、幼若性や個体専有面積の大きさなどの困難が伴い、新品種の育成には時に30年を超える長い年月が必要です。これを効率化するためには、選抜対象となる重要形質に連鎖するDNAマーカーを開発して利用することが重要です。このようなDNAマーカーを開発・利用しながら、実際にリンゴの育種を行って、優れた特性を持つリンゴの新品種やリンゴ台木の新品種の育成を目指しています。
