More than two years have passed since the Daichi was launched. Using all the installed sensors (PRISM, AVNIR-2, and PALSAR), the observation has started on Oct. 23 2006, with four major mission objectives, i.e., map generation, regional observation, disaster mitigation, and resource finding. L-band synthetic aperture radar is the high resolution imaging sensor for land surface indispensable of weather and day-night condition. Longer wave length allowing the signal penetration through the forest canopy enables the detection of the forest related information and the biomass related information. Japan Aerospace and exploration agency (JAXA) established the Kyoto and carbon initiative project to monitor the global forest status using the PALSAR. CO_2 emitted from the forest is heavily related to the global warming and PALSAR will contribute to this environmental problem. This paper introduces the forest monitoring project using the PALSAR.
