Profile

Judotherapy is a branch of Japanese traditional medicine with a history of about 1,300 years, having developed as a means of treating injuries associated with Judo. Judotherapy is similar to orthopedics in some respects, but does not employ surgery or drugs. The Japanese health insurance system recognizes treatment only for trauma such as fracture, dislocation, bruising, or distortion. Judotherapists are accomplished in palpation skills, and use manual closed reduction and fixation for patients with trauma, thus contributing to human health and medical science, and the Japanese health insurance system recognizes these skills as a valid branch of medicine.

Currently, the educational curriculum for Judotherapy provides instruction for students in human body dynamics, fractures, bruises, tendon damage, nerve damage, and sinew damage. Students then move on to study how to reduce and fix fractures, and provide aftercare. Various aspects of the upper limbs, lower limbs, and spinal cord are also included. As the curriculum has adopted modern medical terminology, it has become more rational and easier to understand. With the ageing of society, Judotherapy has expanded into new fields, such as treatments for the knee, lumbar region, and shoulder in the elderly.
