PROFILE: RYOMA NAKAO, DDS, PhD
Born in Tokyo, Ryoma Nakao is a senior research scientist at the laboratory of oral bacterial infection, Department of Bacteriology I, National Institute of Infectious Diseases, a research institute attached to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan. He began working at the institute in 2003, and has been serving as a research group leader since 2010.
Nakao's main research area is immunopathology and etiology of periodontal diseases caused by periodontopathic bacteria including Porphyromonas gingivalis. However, that is now expanding to include development of effective treatment and prevention strategies for not only oral pathogens, but also intestinal and respiratory tract pathogens such as Escherichia coli and Streptococcus pneumoniae, as well as others. His research group is presently pursuing establishment of an intranasal vaccine system that uses bacterial membrane vesicles (BMVs), along with development of antimicrobial and anti-biofilm agents.
