The purpose of this study was to describe the physical conditions of mothers who were in early parenthood after a term of obstetric medical support for women. 500 mothers who had a 6 to 12 month old baby were chosen by a random sampling technique from a basic register of residents in an urban area in the province. I used an original anonymous self-administered questionnaire, conducted by a postal survey. 274 mothers enrolled (a 55.4% response rate). The results were as follows: one third of mothers evaluated general health perception (SF-8GH) during the past four weeks as fair, poor or very poor. Almost half reported "back pain", "a sore throat, cough, or cold", or "lower-back pain". The symptom of cumulative fatigue "easily get tired" was felt often by one fourth of the mothers. 55.5% of mothers who experienced poor physical condition, wanted bed rest up to six month after their childbirth. Mothers who had longer sleep showed significantly fewer physical symptoms and of cumulative fatigue. Mother's evaluations of their physical health were poor, suggesting that they could have a need for some continuous support in early parenthood.
