The purpose of this study is to report some latest trends in teaching English to children in Korea in order to find their implications to the discussion about Japan's education system. Firstly, it reviews the Korean strategy of "segyehwa", which is a Korean word for "globalization" but with more government-initiated policy connotations. As part of this "segyehwa", in 1997, the government introduced its 7th National Common Basic Curriculum, which has been promoting foreign language education ever since. Secondly, the current study summarizes some social problems associated with education expenses, young children's studying abroad, currency outflow, among others. Finally, the study reports "Jeju Global Education City (JGEC)" as a Korean solution to these problems. The Korean government has invited big-name international schools that provide high quality education in Jeju Island, the southern-most island in Korea. Established first in 2011 was North London Collegiate School Jeju, where 437 students, including a Japanese female child from Japan, started to study.
