His research interests are computational photography (super resolution, high dynamic range imaging, depth camera, unconventional imaging sensor) and computer vision (physics-based vision, photometry, reflectance and illumination modeling, 3D vision).

Before joinng AIST, he has worked as a Research Fellow at the Rapid-Rich Object Search (ROSE) Lab (directed by Prof. Alex Chichung Kot and Prof. Wen Gao), Nanyang Technological University in 2015. He has also worked at the Camera Culture Group (led by Prof. Ramesh Raskar), MIT Media Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the Vision, Graphics, and Computational Design (VDG) group (led by Prof. Sai-Kit Yeung), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), as an SUTD-MIT Joint Postdoctoral Fellow from 2013 to 2015.

Boxin earned his Ph.D. degree in information science and technology from the University of Tokyo in 2013. During his Ph.D. study, he worked at the Compute Vision Lab, under the supervision of Prof. Katsushi Ikeuchi. Before coming to the University of Tokyo, he has got his Master of Engineering from Peking University and Bachelor of Engineering from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, China, in 2010 and 2007 respectively. He has worked at Visual Computing Group, Microsoft Research Asia as an intern in 2009, 2010, and 2012, supervised by Dr. Yasuyuki Matsushita.
