環境デザインを持続可能性の観点から捉え、科学的知見を基盤として環境政策・環境計画を支える研究を実施しています。水や物質の循環から野生生物の分布・個体群の動態まで、生態系サービスを生み出す生態系の機能を研究対象とし、経済学や社会学など異分野との協力を重視します。人と自然の関わりを定量化し、地図化することによって国際連合の「持続可能な開発目標」（Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs）の実現に貢献します。地域から国際レベルまでの社会生態システム（Socio-ecological Systems）の構造と機能の解明、すなわち、社会や経済を支えている生態系サービスの空間的分布・時間的変動の定量化を図り、持続可能な社会づくりのための理論と実践の統合に取り組んでいます。
