IKUTA Hanayo(1888-1970)published an essay "Taberukoto to Teisou to" ["Eating and Chastity"] in 1914. The essay states that to replace chastity with bread is a matter of individual freedom since chastity is personal property. This idea provoked a lot of criticism in Japanese society at that time, where most people set a very high value on chastity. Today, a series of Hanayo's comments is being evaluated as an important opinion concerning sexuality ; however, her confusion in operating the words, such as "chastity", has also been pointed out. In this paper, I try to achieve two things by analyzing Hanayo's remarks again. First, I want to clarify that the manner she uses the words such as "chastity," "virgin" and "body" is quite logical. Second, I will outline the content of the right to sexual self-determination, which Hanayo suggested through her writings
