We prepared a λ-shaped compound possessing a 2,3-difluoro-1,4-diphenylbenzene unit and two phenylpyrimidine units. We investigated the liquid-crystalline property using polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimeter, and X-ray diffraction. The compound was found to exhibit nematic, smectic A and anti-clinic smectic C phases, and an unidentified smectic phase on cooling. In the small angle X-ray diffraction pattern of the low temperature phase below the SmCanti, we observed diffraction peaks away from the meridian in addition to those on the meridian, suggesting that the unidentified smectic phase has a modulated structure.
