Task-based language teaching (TBLT) can provide an authentic and meaningful environment for language learners. In this study, the Marshmallow Challenge is used as a task for learners to collaborate and build the tallest free-standing tower with a marshmallow on top. The learners had 18 minutes to achieve this goal and to use English freely as much as possible during the collaborative task. Following an analysis on answers to a listening exercise to test learners listening skills in a pre-worksheet, and a post-worksheet with a 6-point likert scale survey to measure learners’ perceptions of the motivational level and usefulness to learn English answered by the learners; results showed that despite listening ability scores, many learners were engaged, motivated, able to collaborate, be creative, and attempt a hands-on problem-solving skills throughout the task. Such skills are 21st century skills, and TBLT through the Marshmallow challenge was a teaching approach that allowed development of such skills.
