CND41(41 kD chloroplast DNA binding protein) is a novel protein that is induced by sucrose and acts as a repressor for chlorplast gene expression. By electron microscopy observation onto shoot apex cells, wild-type contained proplastid but transformants contained early developed thylakoid membrane structure that looks like to be occurred acceleration of plastid development. Furthermore, the CND41 antisense transformants also showed trends in dwarfism. Analysis of gibberellin contents in transformants showed that GA1 and GA20 contents in leaves of CND41 antisense transformants were lower than wild type. These results may suggest a possible functions of CND41 as a negative regulator of plastid development which can correlate with GA synthesis.
