Currently, most competitive sports in Japan, with some exceptions, are conducted mainly through school club activities. In junior high schools, more than 70% of students are involved in athletic club activities. In the past, Japanese junior high school athletic club activities were held for more than two hours on weekdays and more than three hours on weekends. Additionally, plenty of clubs had less than one rest day per week. Regardless of whether this is good or bad, junior high school athletic club activities are considered to have a great influence on the maintenance and promotion of students’ physical fitness. If it becomes difficult to continue club activities, the physical fitness of junior high school students may be further diminished. To solve this problem, Saturday and Sunday athletic club activities in Japanese junior high schools are shifting from being school-based to being community-based. The introduction of this system will reduce the burden on teachers and allow smaller schools to collaborate with other schools in club activities. This system is scheduled to be introduced in all Japanese junior high schools by 2025, and has gradually been introduced since 2021. However, there are many problems in realizing this system.
