The Asian dust particles are believed to provide highly active heterogeneous reaction sites not only for atmospheric inorganic species but also for organic species including Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, evaluation of the mixing states of PAHs and Asian dust particles have been hampered by the technical difficulty involved in detecting slightest amounts of organic species present on individual particles. Here, we report on our laboratory experiments to detect PAH adsorbed on model Asian dust particles by the application of Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). The first attempt has shown that the application of SERS by metal coating may facilitate the detection of PAHs on individual particle basis.
