Profile

He graduated the Meteorological Collage of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) in 1981. After working in two meteorological observatories in Hokkaido (1981-1984), he has been working on radiation processes of snow and ice in the Meteorological Research Institute (MRI) of JMA (1985-2015). During this period he received Ph.D. in Polar Science from the Graduate University of Advanced Studies, Japan in 2000. After working a professor in Okayama University (2016-2018), he is currently a deputy director of Arctic Environment Research Center (AERC) of National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR) from 2019.

His research interests are optical properties of snow, satellite remote sensing of cryosphere, and aerosol-snow/ice interaction and the relevant climate impact. His experiment areas are Antarctica, the Arctic, the Himalayas, and Hokkaido in Japan. He received the Science Award of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice in 2005 and the Award of the Meteorological Society of Japan in 2008. Recently he is working on Greenland ice sheet to clarify the causes of albedo reduction after 2000.
