Professor Tetsuo Tomiyama is Vice President of the International Professional University of Technology in Tokyo.

He was Professor of Life Cycle Engineering at Manufacturing Theme, School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing, Cranfield University in the UK between October 2012 and September 2018. He was Interim Head of the Manufacturing Informatics Centre of the School, as well as Course Director of the MSc in Global Product Development and Management programme.

Prior to this appointment, he was Professor at Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Material Engineering of Delft University of Technology between July 2002 and September 2012, Professor at Research into Artifacts, Center for Engineering (RACE) of the University of Tokyo in Japan between April 1998 and June 2002, and Associate Professor at the Department of Precision Machinery Engineering of the University of Tokyo between July 1987 and March 1998. Before joining the University of Tokyo, he worked at Centrum voor Wiskunde en Informatica in Amsterdam as a Senior Scientific Researcher between 1 July 1985 and 1 July 1987.

He has been Adjunct Professor of Design School of Kyoto University since April 2015. He was Visiting Professor at the Institute of Industrial Science of the University of Tokyo between July 2006 and March 2017.

Professor Tomiyama’s research activities cover a variety of research topics in engineering design and life cycle engineering. He is an internationally well-known expert in design theory and methodology, function modeling, systems architecting, maintenance engineering, and service engineering. His capability of exploring a new multi-disciplinary area and solving cross-disciplinary problems are best demonstrated by his pioneering work of intelligent CAD, self-maintenance machines, life cycle simulation, and service CAD. Recently, his group is developing robots for cleaning trains. In May 2018, his group was awarded by Innovate UK a KTP project to develop a train cab front cleaning robot.

He has (co-)authored more than 200 research papers, edited books, and been invited to a number of prestigious international conferences. He was Editor-in-Chief of the “International Journal on Advanced Engineering Informatics” (published by Elsevier Sciences) between 1992 and 2012. He is serving as editorial board member for a number of other international scientific journals, too.

Professor Tomiyama has been awarded a number of prestigious awards including: Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award in 2012, the 2000 Contribution Award of the Design and Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers in January 2001, the 20th Society Award of the Japan Society for Precision Engineering in March 1998, The Seventh Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence Conference Award (AAAI) for the paper entitled “Development of Self-Maintenance Photocopiers” in August 1995, and The 56th Important Invention Award Selected by the Science and Technology Agency of the Japanese Government in April 1994 for inventing “Self-Diagnosis System for Image Processing Apparatus”.
He is a fellow of CIRP (The International Academy for Production Engineering), ASME (The American Association of Mechanical Engineers), JSME (The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers), and SDPS (Society for Design and Process Science), as well as a member of JSPE (The Japan Society of Precision Engineering), IPSJ (The Information Processing Society of Japan), JSAI (The Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence), AAAI (The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence), IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), and the Design Society. He is currently Vice Chair of the Scientific Technical Committee Design (STC Dn) of CIRP. He served as a council member of JSME (2002) and JSAI (1989–1992 and 2000¬–2001), Division Head of Design and Systems of JSME (1998–2000), and an Advisory Board Member of the Design Society (2000-2013).

Professor Tomiyama serves many expert evaluator and advisor positions as well. These include External Examiner for Department of Industrial Design, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China (2013-2018), Conference Chair for the 27th CIRP Design Conference held in 10–12 May 2017 and Program Chair for the Fifth Through-Life Engineering Services Conference held in 1–2 November 2016 both at Cranfield University.

He was honored his doctorate degree (Doctor of Engineering) in precision machinery engineering from the Graduate School of the University of Tokyo in March 1985. The title of his doctorate thesis was “Theory of CAD.” He obtained his master’s degree in March 1982 and his bachelor’s degree in March 1980 both in precision machinery engineering at the University of Tokyo.
