近年の気候変動により、作物の安定生産が難しくなってきています。特に穀物では開花期に異常高温に遭遇すると不稔が発生し減収に至ります。そのような開花時の高温不稔発生を軽減する方策として、「早朝開花性」が有効であることが長年提唱されてきました。高温に対して一番脆弱な開花時に高温に遭遇しなくて済むように、開花時刻を気温の低い早朝にシフトし高温を回避する戦略です。私はイネ野生種の早朝開花性を利用した高温不稔発生軽減の実証実験や開花生理の研究を行っています。また登熟期の高温は白濁した玄米を多く発生させ、商品価値が低下してしまいます。今の日本では大変大きな問題です。気候変動に適応した品種開発を目指し、高温不稔や高温登熟について基礎研究から現場実証まで幅広い研究を展開しています。
