In this study we aimed to elucidate the current situation and future issues for the Nutrition Support Team (NST) in Niigata prefecture. A questionnaire which included a hospital form, a sickbed scale, whether there was a NST or not, NST activities, effect of the NST intervention, and extent of cooperation with other facilities was administered in hospitals in Niigata prefecture. Among 129 hospitals, 103 hospitals participated, and a NST was established in 57 hospitals. NSTs were more frequently established in hospitals for acute illness and in hospitals with a capacity of ≧150 beds. Remuneration for the NST was calculated and charged more frequently in hospitals with ≧150 beds. Number of NST interventions for past several years increased in 36.5% of hospitals, and effects of NST intervenitons such as a decreased TPN-use, increased EN-use, increased lipid emulsion-use, improved nutritional knowledge of medical staff were recognized. It was shown that many hospitals do not cooperate sufficiently with other hospital NSTs, but do see a need for this. This study suggests there is a need to establish an inter-hospital NST network.
