ベラ ティエル

Vera Thiel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan. Prior to this appointment, she worked at The Pennsylvania State University, PA (USA) and the Leibniz-Institute of Marine Sciences (IFM-GEOMAR) in Kiel (Germany). Dr. Thiel's research interests focus on environmental microbiology and microbial ecology, which she approaches using different models. She started her research in marine environments, which was followed by studies of extreme environments, such as hypersaline lakes and hot spring environments. Working with Prof. Johannes Imhoff she was introduced to the art of cultivation and taxonomic study of phototrophic bacteria, which was complemented with a postdoctoral training on (meta)genomic analysis of this group with Prof. Donald A. Bryant at The Pennsylvania State University. Her current work focuses on microbial ecology in hot spring microbial mats in USA and Japan.
