The Autopilot System is one of the most popular navigational instruments and many ships are equipped with thissystem, which contributes to labor saving. For this reason, problems concerning this system are often adopted for nationalexaminations for the license of mariners.In the national examinations, problems about the meaning of tuning this system are often set. There are, however,many students who can not imagine the results caused at sea by wrong tuning. In order to tune this system, students canapply control theory, ships maneuvering theory etc. that they have studied. It seem ,however, that many students can notrecognize the relation between this system and theories.To solve this problem, new experiments and exercises for the designing and tuning of the Autopilot were adoptedusing a controller design tool. As a result, students were able to tune the Autopilot by themselves.
