I am a researcher on modern Indonesia society and culture. While my research touches on a range of subjects, in recent years most of my research has been related to World War II and the Japanese occupation of Indonesia.
My particular concern, stemming from work on the comfort women (ianfu) and observation of discourses on the war in Indonesia, Japan, the US, and the Netherlands, is to try to provide a stable understanding of the history through extended, holistic, and unbiased research.
Currently, I am engaged in a number of projects, including one examining the wartime networks of the Japanese occupation and the prewar and postwar periods, a project to examine the intellectual aspects of the cold war relationships between the US and Asia (particularly the US-based, Romanian-born expert on Indonesian politics, Guy Pauker), and medicine--especially malaria--in Indonesia during the war.
Nonetheless, my roots in the study of Indonesian language and literature pull me back to other subjects, and I remain actively interested in other subjects, and am working on the publications during the Japanese occupation period.
