Examination of the recently synthesized molecular azafullerene solid (C59N)(2) under the electron microscope reveals a remarkable self-assembly of the quasi-spherical nitrogen-substituted fullerene units on the mesoscopic length scale into large (micrometer-size) hollow spherical particles. A minority hexagonal crystalline phase is also present.
