The present study aims to examine English teacher education textbooks published in Japan from a testing perspective, and determine what testing-related topics and contents are generally covered in teacher education in Japan. We selected 10 English teacher education textbooks for analysis and examined them both quantitatively and qualitatively. The quantitative analysis showed the general tendency in terms of the number of textbooks explaining different testing-related terms, while the qualitative analysis revealed strengths as well as weaknesses of the contents. The results showed that major concepts in testing such as validity and reliability were explained in most books. Although various types of tests were also introduced in most books, some did not provide concrete examples and thus, it might be difficult for the readers to understand the similarities and differences in test types. This paper also discusses the feedback that we received in our summer workshop as well as our future research.
