我々は金属, 紙, 布などの物体表面の材質の判別を視覚でも行っている. これは物体表面のテクスチャやハイライトなどから判断している. 本研究では, このような質感認識システムを計算機上で実現することを目的とする. 画素値として分光分布を持つスペクトル画像を利用して物体の質感認識を行う. タイプとして金属物体 (M-type)・光沢のある非金属物体 (S-type)・光沢のない非金属物体 (R-type) に分類する. さらに, この3タイプに加えて相互反射領域の判別を行う.

現在、自然物体の物理モデルに基づいたリアルなCG表現が研究されている。しかし多層の薄膜干渉のシミュレーション例は今までにパールマイカ塗料のシミュレートがあったのみでほとんど行われたことはなかった。本研究では、多層の薄膜干渉に注目し真珠の表現を行った。同時に真珠らしさに関する心理実験を行い、それらの結果をモデルの修正やパラメータの決定に取り入れる。

現在,物理モデルをCGに用いて,リアルな自然物体の表現が研究されている。.しかし,多層膜物体で起こる干渉のような現象は表現されていない.そこで,多層膜物体の一例として真珠を取り上げそのCG表現を試みる.本研究では,真珠らしさの心理実験及び真珠テクスチャの解析・生成を行った.
